🌿New Shade Trees for Reading and a Stormwater Garden to Keep the Manassas Central Library Beautiful🌳✨
Location:
8601 Mathis Ave, Manassas, VA 20110
☀️ Problem: The Outdoor Space Needed Shade and Better Drainage
The Manassas Central Library has a wonderful outdoor learning space popular with kids and families. It features seating, a story trail, and grassy space for exploring and reading. However, the area lacked adequate shade to keep readers comfortable in the summer and an effective way to manage stormwater runoff after rainy days. That’s why this community landscaping project was such a meaningful upgrade for the neighborhood.
On hot, sunny days, kids found the space less inviting. After rainstorms, excess water collected at the slope’s base, causing muddy patches and reducing usable space.
🌻 Solution: Stormwater Garden and Shade Trees for a Cooler, Greener Space
To address these issues, we teamed up with fantastic community partners to give the library a landscape upgrade. This community landscaping project included:
- Installing a vibrant stormwater garden filled with pollinator-friendly native plants to naturally manage rainwater.
- Planting five native shade trees to provide immediate relief from the sun, making outdoor reading comfortable all summer.
- Creating a whimsical Wishing Tree from an old pine stump, offering children a special spot to hang their dreams and wishes.
- Designing and installing informative stormwater garden signage to educate visitors about environmental benefits.
We partnered closely with Prince William County Government, Virginia Turfgrass Council Environmental Institute, TruGreen, Casey Trees, Bartlett Tree Experts, and Prince William Public Libraries. As always, teamwork brought this community landscaping project to life.
The colorful and engaging stormwater garden sign was thoughtfully designed by MowCow’s Marketing Manager and Graphic Designer, Drew Nowak. (Some images courtesy of iStock.com.) We’re proud to have created something fun, educational, and professional for our community to enjoy.
🐝 How We Did It: Collaboration, Planning, and Hard Work
This community landscaping project required careful planning and close collaboration among several skilled partners. MowCow’s Sustainability Catalyst Cindy Smith and landscape specialist Dan Hupart worked alongside Prince William County’s Andrew Uglow to create the perfect design.
On World Planting Day (March 21st), the project officially took root. Jessie Ward from Bartlett Tree Experts generously shared her extensive tree-planting knowledge with our crews. Casey Tree Foundation provided mature, high-quality trees ensuring immediate shade for the children.
The stormwater garden featured these beautiful native plants:
- Ivory Halo Dogwood
- Soft Touch Holly
- Purple Creeping Phlox
- Purple Coneflowers
- Butterfly Weed
- Thread-Leaf Moonbeam Coreopsis
- New England Aster
Under the leadership of landscaping captain Pedro Rosa and dedicated crew members Jeovani D. and Victor Z., the MowCow team accomplished the following:
- Thoroughly prepared the planting beds and cleared debris
- Added fresh, nutrient-rich soil and chestnut brown oak bark mulch—learn more about our mulch services here.
- Installed edging and gator bags around new trees for proper watering
🌞 Conclusion: A Beautiful and Functional Community Space
Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved, Manassas Central Library now enjoys a welcoming, environmentally-friendly outdoor space. With new shade trees and an effective stormwater garden, the area is comfortable, sustainable, and ready for plenty of summer reading adventures.
We’re proud to have led this community landscaping project from start to finish. It’s exactly the kind of community-building work that inspires us daily—making local spaces greener, healthier, and happier.
